Description
“Culture, Power, and Identity in the Indo-Pacific: Anthropological Perspectives on the Asia-Pacific Region”.
This course examines the Indo-Pacific through an anthropological lens, with a special focus on the Asia-Pacific region. It explores how culture, identity, power, and historical legacies shape contemporary social and political dynamics across diverse communities. Topics include Indigenous sovereignties, migration and diaspora, environmental change, development, and the impacts of regional and global power shifts. Students will engage with ethnographic case studies, postcolonial and decolonial theories, and regional frameworks such as ASEAN and the Pacific Islands Forum. Emphasis is placed on local perspectives, lived experiences, and the role of anthropology in understanding the cultural dimensions of geopolitical change in one of the world’s most dynamic regions.
