Description
JOURNALISM AND SOCIAL SCIENCE
Course Goals : There can be no healthy democracy without media pluralism. Journalists are the gatekeepers of freedom and of free expression yet are targeted worldwide. Why do autocratic leaders point at the press as enemies of the people? We will discuss key elements of journalism. You will become acquainted with gathering information from different parts of the world and platforms and learn to compare them. Why does news matter? What’s the influence of the media on the way we think and act and how does it set the agenda in a society? How is the same story told differently by distinct media organisations and countries? What does the timeframe tell? What does objectivity vs. subjectivity stand for? Who owns the media? We are all, to different degrees, news consumers; hence what you learn in this course will be useful to you throughout your academic years and life in general.
