Objectifs
The University Diploma (DU) "Complement System, Diseases and Therapeutics" aims to provide specialized, structured, and up-to-date training on the fundamental, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of the complement system in human diseases.
This program addresses the growing needs of clinicians, biologists, researchers and industry confronted with the rapid expansion of knowledge and therapeutics targeting
complement. The program enables healthcare and research professionals to master the theoretical bases, the exploratory tools, the pathophysiological mechanisms and the therapeutic strategies associated with this essential immune system.
The educational objectives of the University Diploma (DU) are structured around the following axes:
- Understand the organization, regulation and effector functions of the complement system in innate and adaptive immunity.
- Integrate complement-driven pathophysiological mechanisms across major disease families: renal, autoimmune, hematological, neurological, ophthalmological, infectious, oncological, obstetrical and rare diseases.
- Master the principles of complement biological exploration (functional tests, immunochemical analyses, complement genetics) and their interpretation in a clinical context.
- Apply this knowledge to guide and optimize diagnostic and therapeutic management, notably with complement-targeting treatments (anti-C5, proximal complement inhibitors…).
- Critically appraise the scientific literature and ongoing innovations in the complement field, with a view to continuous professional development and the ongoing enhancement of expertise.
- Foster a transdisciplinary integration of fundamental and clinical knowledge, aligned with the training and innovation goals of FHU COMET.
This diploma aims to serve as a leading educational program, equipping participants with comprehensive expertise that is directly transferable to clinical, diagnostic, and research activities related to the complement system.
Compétences visées
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:
- Master the theoretical bases of the complement system, necessary to understand its physiological functions and its role in pathophysiological mechanisms of human disease.
- Interpret a complement biological workup, know the available diagnostic tools and understand their indications, limits and interpretation.
- Grasp pathophysiological and diagnostic aspects associated with complement dysfunction across a broad spectrum of pathologies (renal, autoimmune, neurological, oncological, hematological, ophthalmological, obstetrical, etc.).
- Apply complement-targeting therapeutic strategies, integrating indications, mechanisms of action, adverse effects, and follow-up modalities according to the clinical context.
- Perform a critical analysis of the scientific literature by assessing data quality, methodological rigor, and the clinical or translational implications of studies focusing on the complement system, complement-mediated diseases, and complement-targeted therapies

Material and Technical Resources
To promote an interactive and collaborative learning approach, various digital tools (to be specified where available) will be provided to enable participants to:
· exchange files and data
· share resources and information
· communicate easily outside the classroom and scheduled teaching sessions
Instructions for accessing the Moodle platform are provided in the welcome handbook.
Once logged into the Moodle homepage, participants will find a range of tutorials available in the “AIDE” section, designed to support them in discovering and getting started with the platform.
Methods for Monitoring Training Delivery and Assessing Learning Outcomes
Completion of the training is documented through the instructional design plan, technical activity logs from distance learning sessions, completed assignments, and connection records from the video-conferencing platform or electronic attendance signatures.
At the end of the program, participants complete an online satisfaction questionnaire immediately after training. The responses are analyzed, and a summary report is submitted to the program’s academic committee.
