Description

The class aims at providing sociological and demographical understanding of some main issues in the Global South in order to deconstruct the very notion of “South”. During each course we will focus on specific case studies in various regions to understand what constitutes the main characteristics of South populations and societies. We will explore three main topics: work and globalization; migration and mobility; social movements and development policies. We will compare workers’ trajectories in a globalised world to understand the heterogeneity of labour in the South and their similarities with Northern countries: informal work, subcontracting, undeclared work. Furthermore, we will examine both the diversification of migration forms relative to the different regions and the attractiveness of some Southern countries for migrants. The course will address the impact of the “South” notion on populations by analysing the link between development policies and social uprisings or protests.
